Abbotsbury Swannery is unique - it was established by Benedictine Monks who built a monastery at Abbotsbury during the 1040's.  The monks farmed the swans to produce food for their lavish banquets.  This is the only place in the world where you are now able to walk through the heart of the colony of nesting Mute Swans.  From mid-May to late June, hundreds of fluffy cygnets hatch from eggs in nests on or near the pathways.  Witness the daily mass feeding sessions of up to 600 swans at midday.

Abbotsbury Subtropical Gardens was established in 1765 by the first Countess of Ilchester as a kitchen garden for her nearby castle.  It has developed since then into a magnificent 30 acre garden filled with rare and exotic plants from all over the world.  The restaurant is very special, constructed in the colonial style, built of timber with a raised veranda overlooking the beautiful Gardens.
