We depart Plymouth at 7.30am, making a coffee stop along the way, with a longer stop for lunch at Chesterfield. The town is currently home to one of the largest open air markets in Britain (held every Monday). Its most famous landmark is the distinctive “crooked” spire on its predominantly 14th century church. We then continue the short journey onto our hotel to check in and relax.

Tuesday

This morning we begin our “Emmerdale” inspired tour of the Yorkshire Dales. Firstly we visit the charming market town of Otley (the fictional Hotton), which is situated in the beautiful countryside of Lower Wharfedale. As you wander through the streets, you will recognise historical settings from “Emmerdale”, “Heartbeat”, “A Touch of Frost” and “The Chase”. Otley also has it’s own bellman who walks around the town calling out the local news and events. We then visit the beautiful village of Esholt where you can even buy a pint and some lunch in the original Woolpack Inn (not included in tour cost) before exploring the village itself. In 1975, Esholt was chosen as the village on which the exterior scenes of “Emmerdale” were based. The Post Office still exists and is exactly as it was when filming ended here in the mid 1990’s. The fictional “Home Farm” was based on the real Home Farm on the Esholt Estate, which dates back to 1691.

Wednesday

– We travel south today to Holmfirth, the beautiful picture postcard market town on the edge of the Peak District Park. Here we will join the “Summer Wine Tour Bus” for a 10 mile journey lasting around 45 minutes and taking in the film locations used in the BBC series. You will then have time to enjoy a cup of tea at Sid’s Café or pay a visit to Compo’s House, now home to the hilarious, award winning “Last of the Summer Wine Exhibition” (ability to climb steps is essential). We then travel to Holmfirth Vineyard for an informative tour of the winery and 7 acre vineyards with unrivalled panoramic views of the Holme Valley, finishing with a tasting of three different wines.

Thursday

Haworth is our destination this morning – where the Bronte sisters were born. Here we board the Worth Valley steam railway for a 15 minute nostalgic train journey to Keighley. We then visit the National Trust property of East Riddlesden Hall, used as a setting for the film adaptation of Bronte’s “Wuthering Heights”, starring Ralph Fiennes. This intimate 17th Century Manor House and its Great Barn remain largely unchanged by time and provide a wonderful experience for costume drama enthusiasts.

Friday

Sadly we must head home today, we will make a final stop at Worcester for lunch. Edward Elgar was famously born in a small village on the outskirts of this quirky city. There is a mix of old and new buildings in the lovely pedestrianised town centre with an assortment of small shopping malls and independent shops. We leave here mid – late afternoon aiming to arrive back into Plymouth early evening.
