The Grand Western Canal was built in 1814, for primary use of the lime trade.  Horse drawn tub boats worked for over 130 years conveying stone from the quarries, which was then fired into lime for farming and house building.  Today the canal is a country park; home to one of the last remaining horse drawn barges in the UK and an abundance of flora and wildlife.

Although the Grand Western Canal suffered a breach in 2012, the repair works are now 100% complete. The canal reopened in time for its 200th birthday celebrations in May 2014. The horse-drawn barge also celebrated its 40th anniversary on the Grand Western Canal in 2014.
